(News Portal – Dong Nai) - Dragon fruit is currently in the peak harvest season, with production significantly higher than in the sunny months of the year. This is also a season when many countries, including China, harvest this fruit, leading to a sharp decrease in the price of dragon fruit, particularly the red-fleshed variety.
Farmers in Xuan Phu Commune, Xuan Loc District, are harvesting red flesh dragon fruit.
Currently, traders are purchasing red flesh dragon fruit directly from farms in the province at prices ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 VND per kilogram, a decrease of about 2,000 VND per kilogram compared to the previous month, and about 5,000 VND per kilogram compared to the same period last year. This price is much lower than the production cost.
The abundant supply is the main reason for the considerably lower price compared to months when farmers have to use lights for off-season production. Additionally, during the rainy season, the proportion of dragon fruit meeting export standards is lower compared to the sunny months. This type of crop is also prone to diseases, especially the Dragon fruit canker disease, which, if it becomes an outbreak, can severely weaken the plants. Faced with the steep price decline, many red flesh dragon fruit farmers in the province are thinning flowers to reduce harvest output due to low selling prices.
