Friday - 03/08/2012 03:12

That is the topic of World Population Day this year to strengthen the activities of voluntary family planning, childbirth support and prevention of sexually transmitted infections ... and improve maternal, infant, and child health condition.

Dong Nai is a densely populated province in which the number of women takes more than 53% of the population. The concern with the care for reproductive health (RH) is aiming at improving the quality of Maternal and child health care and protection, contributing to improve the race.

* Promote facility approach

Recently, the work on reproductive health care and population - family planning (PFP) has been approached at grassroots levels. This service supplying work is paid attention to by health sector which is more and more convenient, safe, effective, and ensure privacy to gradually meet the needs of the users. So far, 100%  units of family planning service from province to district, town, and city perform sterilization techniques, oral contraceptive implants; 100% clinics of communes and wards are eligible for IUD putting, contraceptive injection and gynecological treatment. The distribution and supply of contraceptive pills and condoms were made through a network of 171 officials and more than 3,600 population collaborators in the basis approaching every household. Therefore, the percentage of couples applying modern methods of contraception is widely developed, including the remote and the most difficult areas.

The work of training, equipping knowledge and professional skills, improving communication skills for PFP staff of all levels... have also been promoted. Thereby, the work of communication -  behavioral change education were conveyed to  objects effectively; people were provided with reproductive health knowledge, understand the symptoms of genital tract diseases, and know where to treat and how to effectively prevent pregnancy...

As for the work of improving the quality of our race with central and local support, Dong Nai has carried out three projects: consulting, pre-marital health check, prenatal and newborn screening; minimizing the imbalance in sex ratio at birth. In particular, consulting activities, pre-nuptial health and reproductive health skills have been deployed widely in schools and industrial parks to make sure young people have basic knowledge of reproductive health and safe sex. In 2011, there were more than 10 thousand participants of the reproductive health clubs, more than 37 thousand people were consulted and nearly six thousand people’s pre-marriage health was checked.

With the prenatal and newborn screening program, in 2011, the province has taken blood samples from heels of 5.7 thousand newborns to test for disease for timely intervention. Results showed that neonatally screened children of Dong Nai province reached 14.8% (the target  assigned by central was 6.2%) and 98% of pregnant women have been monitored  and antenatally checked 3 times / pregnant period. In terms of  interventions to reduce gender imbalance at birth, the industry also had nearly 200 sessions of topical talk with more than 16 thousand people listening, drag reducing gender imbalances at birth to 108 boys/100 girls  compared to 112 boys for every 100 girls as before implementation of the project.

* There are still barriers ...

Although some improvement has been achieved, but the RH / FP in Dong Nai still face many barriers, which lead to its insufficient quality.

According to mr Luu Van Dung, the Head of Sub-Bureau of Provincial Population and Family Planning, maternal mortality and neonatal death of Dong Nai is still high. More women suffer from obstetric complications which often occur  in the hospital and the conditions of abortion is high, taking 25% of all pregnancies, among which many people who have unwanted pregnancies have to take the abortion are under the age of 25. unsafe sex causing sexually   transmitted diseases (including HIV) among adolescents still remains high.

The industry is focusing on communication activities - reproductive health education for workers, because 90% of them are in  childbearing age… but it is  not easy to access to this class  because not only businesses cause barriers to approaches but also many workers a not willing to adapt.

In addition, the state population growth continues at high rate. In 2011, there were nearly 39 thousand children born in the province, up by nearly 1.2 thousand  children compared to that in 2010. The number of third-child-or-more children rose by 2.8 thousands. This year, the number of births is expected to increase from 7-8 thousand cases  compared to that last year and birth rate is likely to extend in 2013.

The message of World Population Day 11-7

1. Building a world where every pregnancy is to be expected, each child will be safe and each youth is raised with their full potential.
2. women, men, youth and the entire community and every country has the right to learn reproductive health. Ensuring universal access to reproductive health is the protection of our future.
