The great festival this year will take place for 7 continuous days with a lot of spiritual and social activities like preaching a sermon on Vu-lan’s significance, praising and honoring typical examples of families with “Parents of epitome and children of filial piety”, perform arts on the topic of “Merit of giving birth”. Especially, in this year festival, the host units also organize quite a number of charity activities.
* Previously, at Long Thien Pagoda (Bien Hoa City), the Management Board of Dongnai Buddhist’s Association had held the ceremony to end the summer meditation retreat and launch Vu-lan festival of 2007. At the ceremony, there were the attendances of Mr. Le Minh Son – Head of Provincial Committee for Religious and Ethnic Affairs.
The course of the summer meditation retreat for peaceful dwelling takes place for nearly three months in hundreds of places all over the province with the participation of 2,061 Buddhist monks and nuns. During the season of summer meditation retreat for peaceful dwelling, Buddhist monks and nuns have chances to brush upon Sutra, abstinence, to further study the Buddhist dharma and especially for monks and nuns to be this is an important “introductory course” on the way to become a monk or a nun. After the course, monks and nuns to be will be issued a certificate of entrance and all the participating monks and nuns will be acknowledged to experience one more year of monks and nuns’ lives. Besides, during the season of summer meditation retreat for peaceful dwelling, Buddhist’s Associations of all levels worshiping the Buddha in Dong Nai also increase the number of social and charity activities like supporting “Day for the poor”, “Month of repaying one’s favour”, supporting victims of Agent Orange and relieving victims of storms and flood with the total amount of VND 170 million.
At the end of the summer meditation retreat for peaceful dwelling, the Management Board of Dongnai Buddhist’s Association also stated the opening ceremony of 2007 Vu-lan festival beginning from July 11 till the end of July according to Lunar Calendar (i.e. from August 23 to September 10).
