According to statistics, as of the end of 2006, the Town had 688 industrial and small industrial production units, in which there were 3 state-owned and 4 foreign invested units, 17 private enterprises and liability limited companies, and 664 individual household businesses, creating employment for over 7,000 labourers. Some potential industries making up a big proportion in the area such as garment, leather products, mechanical engineering and construction materials are going on well thanks to stable market. The industry and small industry do develop and become an important factor in contributing to the economic growth and restructuring of the town, creating employment and settling life for a part of local residents.
In fact, it is not now but it was since 1980 that industrial production units have emerged in Long Khanh. Some of these held a very important position in the then locality, such as the 100 ton per day sugar enterprise, plastic processing enterprise, banana drying enterprise, wood processing enterprise, cattle food processing enterprise, and export food processing enterprise. Nonetheless, since industrial complexes had not been established in the locality yet, most of these enterprises did not have facilitation to expand business, including the investment in new technical equipment. It was until 2004 when the town was reestablished and especially since it started to carry out the task of socio-economic development in the period of 2005-2010, the industry of Long Khanh Town was gradually taking its shape. Mrs. Le Thi Nhu Lan, Party Secretary of Long Khanh Town said that in addition to maintaining and sustaining the pace of industrial development, in 2006 the Communist Party and the People’s Committee of Long Khanh Town made planning of 5 industrial complexes with an area of more than 230 hectares and have associated with Sonadezi to develop three of them: Suoi Tre I, Suoi Tre II and Bao Vinh on an area of around 150 hectares. The Town has also coordinated with the Dong Nai Rubber Company in preparing a plan for the site of a 300-hectare industrial zone approved by the Prime Minister in the third quarter of 2006. Besides, it has prepared steps to develop the construction project of the town’s central market and supermarkets in order to set up a commercial center which is up to the development of the town.
* Line of industries and businesses with development advantage
Long Khanh’s Industry is at present not on equal foot with those of other localities in the province, but it is very clear that what its Party and people have done in recent years is a strong foundation creating a premise for the development of the local industry. According to Mrs. Le Thi Nhu Lan, Party Secretary of Long Khanh, the town will give priority in investing in industries having strength such as developing agricultural products and food processing in association with on-the-spot raw materials (coffee, cashew nuts, special fruits, husbandry products, food processing with raw materials from cattle); mechanical engineering with repair work, especially those for the agricultural and rural mechanization program; industries employing a lot of workers: garment, footwear, manufacturing electric appliances, consumer goods, concrete components and beverage; and focusing on the development of key industries such as water and electric supply and telecommunications aimed at meeting the demand of other industries. However, in order to develop industrial production without harming the environment and to implement the principle of “sustainable development”, Long Khanh Town determines that it will devise a planning, screen and give priority in calling for investment in developing industries which use lesser water with lesser waste and environment pollution.
Particularly, with potentials and advantages on land and soil and being once famous for thousands of hectares of endless gardens of rubber, coffee, rambutan and durian trees, Long Khanh still considers agriculture a strength which needs in-depth investment and development. Currently, in addition to enhancing agricultural promotion and transferring of breakthroughs in science and technology, and introducing new breeds and plant varieties of high quality and productivity into production, the Town has put forward the policy to develop some more industries and businesses to improve farmers’ life and the face of rural areas. Regarding the movement for cultivating mushroom, the Town has up to now steadily developed around 240 mushroom production units, providing 15,000 tons of fresh mushrooms to the market every year. The agricultural promotion center is currently having a plan to conduct a survey on setting up sites to perform mushroom drying so as to assist business households in treating mushroom well during rainy seasons.
