A senior member of the subcommittee on Asia-Pacific of the House of Representatives of the United States, Representative Eni Faleomavaega has just make a press release stating that the so-called Vietnam Human Right Bill code H.R1410 which is hastily voted for approval on the evening of the Sep 11th is a wrong way forward.

In the Press release by Representative Faleomavaega on Sep 12th the Representative expressed it is a pity that the Bill was made by the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights; not Subcommittee on Asia-Pacific, which is responsible for all decision on policies of the United States relating to Vietnam.
Representative Faleomavaega believed that with this unofficial movement, the Subcommittee on Africa did not collect more accurate information before making such a defective Bill. In his own view point, the Bill H.R.1410 is based on outdated information which cannot reflect the improvement of human rights in Vietnam.
The Bill H.R.1410 also reveals its myopia about its approach and being contrary to the efforts of the Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama administration; that are striving to enhance US partnership with Vietnam.
Representative Faleomavaega confirmed that this bill will certainly never become law because H.R.1410 failed of its purposes. The U.S. Congressional Research Service (CRS) has confirmed that this bill might badly affect the warm relationship in terms of politics and security between the U.S. and Vietnam.
Representative Faleomavaega said that State Department of the United States also shares with him their concern that the H.R.1410 bill might affect US’s security relation with Vietnam, possible reducing the opportunity for human rights dialogue between the two countries and it also does not serve the best interests of the United States as well as the Vietnamese Americans community.
After quoting improvements on human rights in Vietnam from the website of the Vietnam Embassy in the United States to reject the false information in the H.R.1410 bill, Representative Faleomavaega recommends representatives involved in the H.R.1410 bill that if they truly care about human rights issues in Vietnam, they’d rather help Vietnam to clean up millions of liters of Agent Orange poured into Vietnam territory from 1961 to 1971 by the US military. Because, according to Representative Faleomavaega, leaving this toxic chemical in Vietnam is a serious human rights violation. /.
