This project is particularly important to research and application of space technologies of the country

Playing a particularly important role in the “Strategy of researching and applying space technology until 2020”, the Vietnam space center takes charge of some essential tasks including: mastering technology and inventing small observatory satellite orbiting the earth which is able to observe the whole Vietnam territory in all weather conditions with modern radar technology; creating and processing satellite data in observing and forecasting natural calamities and environmental disasters; early predicting agricultural productivity and submarine quantity, updating the electronic map for management and suburban planning; researching and preventing global climate change.

The total investment capital of 54 billion Yen deducted from Japanese Government’s OAD capital and Vietnam Government’s reciprocal capital was invested in this project. Vietnam National Satellite Center affiliated to Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology is responsible for implementing this project.

This project is being carried out on an area of 9hectar with 3 main phases including infrastructure and equipments; receipt and technologies transfer; manpower training.

As for infrastructure and equipments, a center for small satellite assembly, integration and testing; also a center for signal receiving; a center for research and implementation; a center for education and training; an operating area, a space and astronomy museum and an observatory are projected to be built.

In the phase of technologies receipt and transfer, 2 small satellites orbiting the earth are projected to be self-assembled with modern radar technology with high resolution and satellite image data application.

Around 350 highly qualified scientists, experts and managers of space technology will be trained for the 3rd phase of the project.

Vietnamese and Japanese representatives are pressing the buttons to start the project

The corner stone in strategic relationship between Vietnam and Japan in space technology

In the congratulatory letter sent to the opening ceremony of the project, Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan emphasized: “The Vietnam space center project is the prominent project of the nation which is synchronously invested and also is the most significantly invested project in the field of science and technology for the last 35 years. The government will enable for the project to be deployed as scheduled, contributing to the researching and applying space technology until 2020…The project is also the corner stone for the strategic collaboration between Vietnam and Japan in space technology”.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Yasuaki Tanizaki, the Japanese ambassador to Vietnam, emphasized the particular significance of the project in heightening the level of cooperation in science and technology in general and space research in particular.

This is a totally different project to other ODA projects that Japan has invested in Vietnam. Previously, Japan mainly invested ODA in infrastructural projects such as airports, roads, bridges and harbors; this time it is a hi-tech project” Mr. Yasuaki Tanizaki said

As the prominently invested project, creating the base for implementing research, education, application and international cooperation in space technology of the country, the Vietnam space center will contribute to the successful implementation of the strategy and plan in the development of Vietnam space technology, promoting research and application, taking the advantages of space technology to serve industrialization and modernization of the country practically and effectively.
