According to the planning approved of by the Prime Minister, Long Thanh International Airport is built in an area of 5000 hectares.
It is a 4F airport as required by ICAO International.
The airport has functions of transit in Southeast Asian region and is capable of competing with other major international airports.
The airport is large enough for the landing of A380-800 aircrafts and is designed to serve 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year.
The airport is expected to be built into three phases.
For phase 1 (2015-2020), two runways for takeoff and land, taxiway, hangars, services and operator buildings, control towers, extra service buildings, a passenger terminal building with a capacity of 25 million passengers per year, a cargo terminal building with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year, an airline industrial park, and an airport city will be built.
Investment capital is estimated at US$6.74 billion.
For phase 2 (2020-2030), three runways for takeoff and land, services and operator buildings, control towers, extra service buildings, a passenger terminal building with a capacity of 50 million passengers per year, an airline industry park, and an airport city according to growing demand will be built.
For phase 3 (2030-2035), Long Thanh International Airport with a capacity of 100 million passengers per year and of 5 million tons of cargo per year and with four runways for takeoff and land will be built according to growing demand.
To facilitate the travelling of passengers to Long Thanh International Airport, the government decided on planning for transport, road links, and railways that connect to the airport.
The roads into and out of the airport to the Northwest connect with Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway and with Ring Road 4 to the Northeast.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang thanked the
provincial leadership for help and the provincial agencies for an effective
cooperation with Ministry of Transport during the process of doing research and
making plans for Long Thanh International Airport.
To bring the airport into operation by 2020, government agencies, Ministry of
Transport, and Dong Nai are to deal with many a challenge, especially how to
mobilize resources for development, stressed Thang.
Mr. Thang asked the agencies at the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam Civil Aviation, and Vietnam Southern Airline Corporation to pay attention to finding out policies and solutions for each investment phases.
Dong Nai is required to keep giving assistance to and maintaining cooperation with the Transport Sector for a high consensus.
