Dong Nai Environment Conference 2011: More Than Two Sponsored Billion USD Contributed to Environmental Protection Fund

The conference was chaired by Vice Chairman of Dong Nai People’s Committee Ao Van Thinh.

The until-late 2010 environmental protection report by Department of Natural Resources and Environment indicates that 19 out of 21 industrial parks in Dong Nai have invested in wastewater treatment systems accounting for 90.5 percent, that 98 percent of urban households have gained an access to clean water supply, that 90 percent of rural households have gained an access to clean water supply, and that 85.2 percent of common waste, 100 percent of medical waste and 61 percent of hazardous waste have been collected.

Besides, the government’s environmental management continues to be strengthened, and communication and law education activities to raise the public awareness of environmental protection are increasingly promoted. Thereby, it gradually helps raise organizations, individuals, and community’s awareness of environmental protection.

At the conference, participants together performed analysis, made evaluation, shared experience, and put forward solutions to contributing to better managing and protecting environment.

Addressing the conference, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai People’s Committee Ao Van Thinh said that environmental management and protection and communications activities to raise people, businesses, and community’s awareness of environmental protection have obtained significant achievements.

However, the big challenge for Dong Nai’s environmental protection in the forthcoming time is that most required drainage systems have not been built and solid waste treatment methods and technologies have become old-fashioned.

To promote environmental protection effectively, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai People’s Committee asked to focus on meeting environmental norms that are referred to in the resolutions that are passed by People’s Council, to enhance environmental management and protection that go together with communication activities with the aim of raising the public awareness of environmental protection, to focus on rural environmental protection that go together with urban wastewater and waste treatment projects, to keep preventing environmental pollution, to protect Dong Nai river, to be determined not to permit manufacturers that fail to meet environmental requirements to go into operation, and to promote the protection of natural environment, forests and biodiversity.

Within the conference, in addition to the signing of joint environment protection action programs in 2011-2015 period, Dong Nai Environment Protection Fund made an announcement of businesses’ donations and received VND2,250 billion (or US$108.49 million) that is contributed to Dong Nai Environmental Protection Fund.

On this occasion, 15 collectives and seven individuals were awarded Dong Nai People’s Committee’s certificates of merit for their contributions to environmental protection.

Other 15 collectives and 13 individuals received certificates of merit from Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
