(News Portal – Dong Nai) - With the goal of providing 50,000 skilled labors in the microchip industry to the labor market by 2030, many universities have opened new major codes and started plans to enroll students and provide technical training for IC engineers.
In Dong Nai province, Lac Hong University is a pioneer in cooperating in building an IC design center. Along with that, Dong Nai University is planning to train personnel to prepare to participate in the teaching of this "hot" major.

It is necessary to invest systematically in training

One of the factors students are most concerned about when choosing a major after graduating from high school is job opportunities. While many other occupations in the labor market are saturated, human resources in the IC industry are very scarce.

Vietnam currently has about 50 businesses investing in the semiconductor chip design industry and 3 businesses investing in the packaging of microchip products. In the coming time, Vietnam will continue to attract investment in this industry. To meet the needs of the labor market, by 2030, Vietnam needs 50,000 labors in the IC industry with university degrees or higher. Meanwhile, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the entire country currently has only about 5 thousand trained workers in this industry. The above data shows the potential job opportunities for IC design engineers.

The area of Ho Chi Minh City - Dong Nai - Binh Duong has a large number of industrial parks, including many enterprises in the electromechanical - electronics industry. Therefore, the need for human resources in the Microchip industry is huge. If Dong Nai can train personnel for the industry, it will be very feasible to provide human resources not only for Dong Nai, but also for the region and the whole country.

According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Long, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics, Faculty of Engineering at Dong Nai University, the university currently has a Faculty of Engineering that trains two majors: Mechanical and Electrical - Electronics. The modules in the Electrical and Electronics major provide students with the core and most basic knowledge of the Semiconductor Circuit industry. “Semiconductor microchips belong to the electronics industry. If you want to invest methodically to train semiconductor IC engineers as the Government wants, you need to have a separate major for in-depth training" - Dr. Long said.

Also, according to Dr. Long, to meet the needs of the market, Dong Nai University plans to open an integrated circuit engineer major. In the coming time, Dong Nai University will cooperate in training lecturers and experts to prepare its personnel for opening this new major code.

A Microchip training major code will soon be opened

According to Associate Professor-Dr. Nguyen Vu Quynh, Vice Principal of Lac Hong University, the IC design major is a small specialization of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology major being taught at the university. In recent times, lecturers and students in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology major have carried out many transfer projects to businesses. The electronic board controls of these projects are all designed by the school's own lecturers and students.

“These control boards are electronic boards, although these boards are large in size, not microscopic semiconductor microchips like current technologies. But from the basic principles, this knowledge about circuit design can be upgraded and equipped with more knowledge about IC design tools very quickly" - Associate Professor-Dr. Nguyen Vu Quynh said.

Recently, Lac Hong University and SUN EDU International Education Joint Stock Company signed a strategic cooperation agreement on building an IC design center at Lac Hong University. The two parties are committed to supporting research and technology development in the field of semiconductor chips.

Also, according to this cooperation agreement, the two sides will focus on developing advanced training programs, providing theoretical knowledge and practical skills for students. Thereby improving their capacity and preparing them to become high-quality experts in the field of electronics and semiconductor circuits. The two parties will develop a comprehensive training program for IC engineers, meeting increasingly stringent requirements from the labor market and industry.

In the near future, Lac Hong University will open the first lecturer training course on semiconductor integrated circuits. The next courses will train students in technical majors close to the Semiconductor Circuit industry to serve the current shortage of human resources. The school will send lecturers to study domestically and abroad to become experts in this field.

Vice Rector of Lac Hong University said that in early 2025, the university will send a delegation of more than 20 lecturers and students to participate in the IC design training course at Southern Taiwan University (funded scholarships). In addition to preparing the delegation, the university continues to invest in training facilities. In addition to self-equip, the school also cooperates with businesses to transfer a number of IC design and manufacturing machines used in production to add students in training.

With the above foundations, Lac Hong University will soon open the Semiconductor Circuit major.
