In recent years, durian cultivation has rapidly expanded in terms of area, rising to the top ranks of high-economic-efficiency crops. In 2023, durian exports reached a record high with an export value of 2.1 billion US dollars, an increase of more than 1.8 times compared to 2022. Currently, Viet Nam has exported durians to 24 global markets. It is forecasted that in 2024, durian exports will continue to set new records.
Durian is also a key crop in Dong Nai, with nearly 12,700 hectares. The entire province has been granted 41 export planting area codes to the Chinese market, covering more than 1,900 hectares with a production volume of nearly 49,000 tons. Additionally, the province has 34 planting areas that have submitted applications and are awaiting approval for codes, covering 977 hectares. There are 10 facilities in the province that have been granted export packaging codes, and 2 facilities are awaiting approval.

The conference focused on discussing sustainable development solutions for durian cultivation from seedling stages, safe cultivation practices, to harvesting, preservation, and packaging, ensuring export market standards. In particular, building sustainable supply chains from production to export plays an important role.
Vice Chairman Vo Van Phi emphasized that the organization and development of the durian industry must involve the cooperation between state management agencies, association organizations, and specialized sectors to facilitate enterprises and farmers. Currently, more than 10% of the total durian cultivation area in the province has been granted export planting area codes. The current challenge is that the majority of durian cultivation areas are not yet integrated into the supply chain, with production, processing, and packaging stages still facing many issues. The supply chain is often disrupted by price fluctuations. The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is urged to propose solutions for developing quality seed sources. With the durian harvest season underway, it is crucial to focus on promotion and connection activities to ensure market access for the products. Regarding the establishment of planting area codes and export packaging facilities, farmers and packaging facilities must adhere to their responsibilities to ensure product quality meets export market standards, avoiding violations that could negatively impact the entire industry. Localities should also coordinate with enterprises, cooperatives, and farmers in organizing supply chains, limiting unhealthy competition that disrupts the market and breaks the supply chain. This will contribute to building the Dong Nai durian brand to compete well in terms of price and quality in the market.
