Preliminary summing up 3-year implementation of the program for rural and mountainous areas: effectively deployed 131 projects

On the morning of January 22nd, the Ministry of Science and Technology collaborated with the People’s Committee in Dong Nai province and Trang Bom district to hold a conference on preliminary summing up 3-year implementation of the program “Building models to apply and transfer scientific and technological advances in rural and mountainous socio-economic development in the 2004-2010 periods”. Participants of the conference were Tran Quoc Thang – Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Bui Manh Hai – Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of this program, Nguyen Viet Thang – Deputy Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development, Ao Van Thinh – Vice-Chairperson of Dong Nai provincial People’s Committee, and leaders of the Department of Science and Technology in the Southern provinces.

        After more than 3-year deployment, 131 projects (76 ones managed by the Central and 55 ones by the authorized agencies) were deployed in 52 province with the total cost of VND335,881 million. According to the report of the projects, the program mobilize over 1,100 scientific cadres from 68 scientific-technological organizations of the Central and localities in the whole nation to serve at rural, mountainous, deep-lying, remote and ethnic minority areas. This solved basic problems as follow: restructuring plants, using high-quality plants and livestocks; developing Vietnamese cost-effective products; developing fisheries and cattle-breeding; developing industrial crops, medicinal plants and fruit trees; cultivating and protecting the forest; preserving and processing seafood and agro-aquatic products; taking advantage of agricultural waste; cultivating edible mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms; providing clean water for households and citizen groups; restoring and improving traditional crafts; applying biotechnology to production; and providing scientific and technological information for rural and agricultural development.

        Mr. Bui Manh Hai judged that the program had made a sound start to apply scientific and technology advances to production, bringing real socio-economic effects in the area, and contributing to improving people’s lives. Specially, together with such programs as “Agricultural encouragement”, “Fishing encouragement” and “Industry encouragement”, the program developed mushroom planting model, cage fish breeding in the sea, and established small seafood and agro-aquatic products processing enterprises in the localities. From then on, jobs were provided for tens of thousands of laborers in rural and mountainous areas.
