Currently, Dong Nai is implementing a science and technology program to support businesses to improve their competitiveness, apply advanced quality management systems, and protect intellectual property in the process of integration in the period 2016-2020. In recent years, Dong Nai's departments and agencies have had many solutions to support enterprises and cooperatives in the province to register trademarks and protect intellectual property, etc.
Awareness raising for business owners and cooperatives
Mr. Le Xuan Truong, Head of the Specialized Management Department (Department of Science and Technology), said that currently, in order for goods to be recognized with trademark and rights to be protected, it depends on the time of registration of verification procedures to establish intellectual property rights reviewed and appraised by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam. If enterprises do not register their trademarks early, they may not have the desired brand names or trademarks because the registration database is full, the risk of having the same name is very high.
Mr. Vo Van Tinh, Acting Director of Dong Nai Market Management Department, shared that for many large enterprises and multinational companies, most of their products have been registered for trademarks. These companies also often coordinate with market management forces in brand identification and protection activities, so in the process of checking, it is easy to detect violations and signs of counterfeit and pirated goods.
As for small businesses, the registration of trademark protection is less concerned. In fact, products, which have not been registered, will not be easy to detect and handle counterfeit objects, and when an incident occurs, the main damage subject is the enterprise.
Many support programs
According to the Department of Science and Technology, in the period of 2016-2018, the whole province had 192 units to be supported for trademark registration and intellectual property protection with a total funding of more than 6.4 billion VND. In the first 6 months of 2019, the Department has received the registration of more than 30 units participating in the program. Currently, the registering units are in the waiting period of the survey, guiding the adjustment of registration information and additional information as required by the program to prepare support procedures.
The Department of Science and Technology will coordinate with relevant departments, branches and localities to continue monitoring and guiding enterprises and cooperatives wishing to complete the procedures for trademark registration and intellectual property, and promote support for local products, deploy more support programs and training on intellectual property and local brand establishment, etc.
Mr. Le Xuan Truong emphasized that the criteria to be supported for registration of trademarks are that enterprises and domestic production units must have products that are in the province's competitive advantage, giving priority to small and medium-sized enterprises. Trademark registration is the first step of businesses in the process of creating a brand name and a specific brand for the market to identify.
Besides, in recent times, Dong Nai has also been focusing on strongly developing agriculture towards modern commodity production, forming, and developing concentrated cultivation and husbandry areas with effective production structure, meeting the requirements of high value, competitive, consumer market, and high efficiency.
Production and distribution activities shall be associated with the implementation of the program One Commune One Product (OCOP), including solutions towards building big brands for local agricultural products.
