Production linkages

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Vice Chairman of Cam My District People's Committee, said that the district has formed a number of large-scale concentrated production areas, with four agricultural products awarded VietGAP and GlobalGAP certificates, including: rambutan, soursop, pepper and durian. This is an advantage for the local authority and people to continue investing in other key plants and animals, including green vegetables.

In addition to support policies on capital, procedures, and output connections of the province, in recent time, Cam My district has increased investment in production electricity, roads and canals supplying water to each production region; organised training techniques to care for plants and animals suitable to the soil conditions of each commune; and proactively built separate mechanisms for each product, in each locality, as a basis for implementing the project "One product per commune and select key crops of the district". Hence, it encourages farmers to link up to create large production models, in order to create favorable conditions for businesses investment in new technologies and seeds into agriculture, creating a chain of planting - processing - consuming, bringing safety products to the society and contributing to improving people's income.

In Xuan Dong commune, a model of large production linkages to attract businesses for agricultural investment has been concerned for implementation in recent years. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Tay commune, said that the locality has nearly 200 hectares of vegetables and establishments of 4 cooperatives, each hamlet has a vegetable cooperative. Vegetable productivity of households in cooperatives and cooperative groups is better, and the output is also more stable due to ensuring the type, quantity and quality to meet large orders. Most vegetable cooperative groups implement production processes according to GPA to meet the market's food hygiene and safety requirements.

Increasing profits

Previously, in the vegetable fields, people planted only 1-2 crops/ year; for the remaining time, they had to grow other crops that used less water such as corn, peanuts, and sesame. However, in the last few years, vegetables have been grown all year round without any problems in water resources. Production efficiency is therefore also improved.

Ms. Dang Thi Giang (Hamlet 5, Xuan Tay Commune) said that she used to alternate 2 crops of vegetables and 2 crops of corn on an area of over 1.1 hectares, on average, the annual profit was over VND 100 million. However, since shifting to intensive farming of vegetables, thanks to the adequate irrigation system and anti-insect nets, the income increased greatly, in 2019, the profit from vegetables was estimated at VND 350-400 million.

According to statistics, the whole district of Cam My has more than 2 thousand hectares of vegetables, concentrated in Xuan Dong, Song Ray and Xuan Tay communes. In recent years, due to mastering the development process of each type of vegetable, applying safe vegetable production, and regularly changing crops, the yield and profit from vegetables are increasing. The district authorities are recommending that farmers proactively monitor the weather to take appropriate measures for pest prevention, at the same time, take plans to proactively regulate water to avoid drought that occurs on crops at the peak of the hot season.
