In 2006, 10 storms and 4 tropical low pressures occurred in the South Chinese Sea but only the typhoon Durian (storm No.9) affected Dong Nai. Although the typhoon did not directly hit the province, it caused damage to property and houses of residents living in two districts of Long Thanh and Cam My, injured 4 people, blew up 305 houses’ roofs, caused 18 houses collapsed and blew down 97 hectares of rice plants, 14 hectares of annuals and 93 hectares of perennials. Right after the storm, the local authorities did many ways to help the local people, making good the damage such as transporting the injured to hospitals, re-roofing the damaged houses and so on. As for flood and storm disasters, in the province from May 2006 up to now, it was estimated that 2 people was killed in boat sinking accidents, 17 people were injured, 3142 houses were flooded, 1164 houses were blown up, 152 houses collapsed, 62 houses were damaged and 410 houses were moved. In addition, a large number of classrooms, medical stations, streets, capacitors, power grids and cultivating fields were greatly damaged.

According to weather forecasts, this year the rainy season has many changes. It starts from May and ends approximately in the middle of November 2007. Storms and tropical low pressures are expected to occur and affect Dong Nai’s weather at the end of the season. Accordingly, low floods may occur in late May and early June. The whole season may have between 4 and 5 floods and high floods are likely to occur at the end of July, August and October. In order to cope with floods and storms and relieve the damage in 2007, Ao Van Thinh – leader of the PFAFS&D Steering Board suggested PFAFS steering boards at all levels should make regular reports on disasters to the Provincial People’s Committee and relevant boards and officials for timely solutions.
