Mr. Hiep is extremely successful in breeding out-of-season frogs |
Mr. Hiep’s farm of breeding frogs covers an area of around 500 square meters with 3 different cages for reserved, parent and breeding frogs. He builds cages with 6-12 square meter wide, underlay with polyethylene plastics and covered with nets to restrain rain water. These cages are designed to fit with different species. According to Mr.Hiep, natural frogs only breed one time during rainy season. Except for this period, frogs hardly give birth. However, his farm can provide frogs all the time of the year without depending on weather and breeding season. His secret for breeding frogs out of season seems to be very simple but only experienced persons are able to be successful. According to him, frogs can breed in wrong season when we create artificial rain and maintain water temperature at approximate 26oC (similar to that of outside environment). Besides, nutrition for parent frogs is also very important, which is required to provide adequate nutrients, especially high nutritious foods and vitamin E and gonadotropic substances like fish, etc. At present, his farm is breeding 50 thousand of frogs ranging from various ages and they all are bred to meet demands of those farms where frogs are bred to sell out in the market.
Frogs at Hiep’s farm are now available for breeders for the entire year. |
Mr.Hiep talked to us that he left home for Ba Ria Vung Tau to study the techniques of breeding frogs. After 8 months of study, he bought 5 couples of parent frogs. Due to his good practice of learned knowledge, for the first time, he could succeed in breeding 5,000 frog breeds. Given such initial success, he continued to expand his farm. At present, his farm always sustains 500 couples of parent frogs that can give birth to more than 150 thousand of breeds each year. Breeding frogs after 45 days can be sold at the price from 1,000 to 1,300 dongs/frog. This method has helped him sustain parent frogs even when frog price is down.
It is difficult to force frogs to give birth at breeder’s will but it is also more important to breed frogs without much loss to buy them to breeders. He advised that if you want to breed baby frogs successfully, the living factor is the top concern. Breeders should always create ideal water environment, pH from 5.5 to 7.5, and useful biologic complex made from biological products; clean cages frequently with anti-bacterium chemicals, etc. For those who came to his farm for buying frog breeds, he always taught them the techniques of care and cage construction. Nowadays, in addition to the supply of frog breeds, he is now a main trader of meat frogs. With this effective method, his family can earn more than 200 million dongs per annum.
