After the election list for the State President was discussed and passed, the National Assembly elected Member of the Politburo and the Standing Member of the Central Party Committee Secretariat Truong Tan Sang as the State President with 487 votes or a 97.4 percent.

On behalf of the National Assembly, the National Assembly Standing Committee, the people, and the voters throughout the country, Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung offered flowers to and extended congratulations to the newly-elected President Truong Tan Sang.
Delivering his speech, Truong Tan Sang expressed his thanks to the National Assembly for placing faith in and electing him as the State President.
“This is a great honor as well as a huge responsibility that the Party, the State and the People have given to me”, stated Sang.
The new President promised to try his best to serve the country and the people, to take the President’s responsibility and exercise the President’s rights that are required by the Constitution and Law, to learn and improve knowledge constantly, to self-train frequently, to maintain moral qualities, to be public-spirited and selfless, and to follow the ethical example of President Ho Chi Minh.
After taking his office, State President Truong Tan Sang nominated:
- Member of the Central Party Committee, Vice State President in the 12th tenure, and the 13th National Assembly Deputy Nguyen Thi Doan to the National Assembly as the Vice State President.
- Member of the Politburo, Prime Minister in the 12th tenure, and the 13th National Assembly Deputy Nguyen Tan Dung to the National Assembly as the Prime Minister;
- Secretary of the Central Party, Chief Judge of the Supreme People's Court in 12th tenure, and the 13th National Assembly Deputy Truong Hoa Binh to the National Assembly as the Chief Judge of the Supreme People's Court.
- Member of the Central Party, Secretary of Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee, and the 13th National Assembly Deputy Nguyen Hoa Binh to the National Assembly as Head of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.
The National Assembly is expected to elect Vice State President, Prime Minister, Chief Judge of the Supreme People's Court, and Head of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.
