The Title of Associate Professor Awarded to Dr. Pham Van Sang

On the morning of November 12, the State Council for Professor Title held an announcing ceremony for Prof. and Associate Prof. titles, awarding Prof. and Associate Prof certificates 2011 at Temple of Literature.

Dr. and Director of Dong Nai Department of Science and Technology Pham Van Sang was bestowed the title of Associate Professor.

The State Council for Professor Title’s report indicates that among 55 candidates for professor title and 458 others for Associate Prof. title nominated by 78 grassroots Councils for Prof. title, 34 nominees for Prof. title (representing 61.81 per cent, as much as 47.88 per cent in 2010) and 374 others for Associate Prof. title (representing 81.65 per cent, as much as 73.76 per cent in 2010) were recognized as professors and associate professors by the State Council for Professor Title after defending their theses at 27 Sector and Inter-sector Councils for Professor Title.

Professor, Doctor of Science, and General Secretary of the State Council for Professor Title Tran Van Nhung said that several criteria for Prof. and Associate Prof titles were raised one level higher and that those new requirements had been publicly announced since 2009.

These new requirements are something necessary that is suggested by a majority of teachers, scientists, colleges, and universities with the aim of making criteria for Prof. and Associate Prof titles more practical and scientific. And more importantly, this will make our country’s scientific criteria for Prof. and Associate Prof titles closer and closer to regional and international ones.

To be conferred the titles of Prof. and Associate Prof, in addition to such requirements as a required number of hours for giving lecture and scientific guidance, a minimum of 6 points for scientific projects for associate professors and of 12 points for professors who are principal lecturers at colleges and universities, and 10 points and 20 points for associate professors and professors respectively who are also lecturers, each candidate must present one overview report on scientific and technological research achievements and another one in both Vietnamese and English on training achievements at the presence of the Grassroots Council for Professor Title and the Sector and Inter-sector Council for Professor Title and gain at least two thirds, three quarters, and two thirds secret votes cast by the grassroots Council for Professor Title, the Sector and Inter-Sector Council for Professor Title, and the State Council for Professor Title members, respectively.

Dr. and Director of Dong Nai Department of Science and Technology Pham Van Sang, who has been a lecturer at university and in charge of giving scientific guidance to undergraduates and postgraduates since 2003.

Also, Mr. Sang is the first person with a Ph.D degree to be awarded the title of Associate Professor.
