At the seminar entitled “The youth with traffic culture – I’m interested in it and how about you?” recently held in Dong Nai province, it must begin to raise the awareness of traffic safety for young people at a very young age, and it was necessary to diversify forms and methods of traffic safety propaganda.

Conducting traffic safety propaganda through contests on traffic safety

The campaign “The youths with traffic culture” is launched by the Secretariat of the Central Youth Union. Being well aware of the role and importance of “traffic culture” in society, especially for young people, Dong Nai Youth Union in particular and the South-East provinces’ Youth Union in general has actively propagandized and educated the youth to strictly observe the traffic laws. Specially, the Youth Union also focused on renovating the contents and forms of traffic safety propaganda, building basic criteria on cultural behaviors when joining in land-road traffic. The most important thing is that the campaign attracted a large number of young participants and supporters.

At the seminar, everyone agreed that the Youth Union of South-East provinces well implemented the campaign “The youth with traffic culture” with such diversified forms of traffic safety propaganda as: setting up panels of of traffic safety propaganda along main streets; organizing seminars on traffic safety and contests on traffic safety knowledge & rules; and performing small traffic safety plays, etc. These diversified forms of propaganda made traffic rules easy for everyone to understand clearly. In addition, there were voluntary youth groups in provinces and cities, who participate in maintaining traffic order and safety in key traffic points, repairing damaged roads and tidying up key roads and streets. The image of young volunteers contributed to raising the awareness of many teenagers. The implementation of the campaign reduced the traffic violation among young people.

Drawing contests on traffic safety – a favorite form of propaganda

However, the reality shows that some young people have still lacked sense of traffic safety when joining in traffic, and they are the cause of traffic accidents. Many had not been aware of observing traffic laws and purposefully violated traffic laws. The acts of traffic violations often occur including driving at speeds exceeding the prescribed speeds, overtaking other vehicles in contravention of regulations, blowing horns or causing big noises, driving into restricted roads, and driving vehicles in groups of two or more at speeds exceeding the prescribed speeds, etc.

At the seminar, a representative of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union affirmed “Increasing awareness of traffic culture cannot be implemented overnight, but it requires great efforts and self-awareness of each individual as well as the support from the society. As such, building awareness of traffic culture has to be closely connected with seeking solutions to traffic problems.  In particular, it is necessary to identify that teenagers are the subjects that needs to be propagandized and educated about traffic safety. And each traffic police officer has to become a propagandist of traffic culture”.

Pham Hong Thang from Binh Duong province’s Youth Union said that it was necessary to build a strict system of traffic laws to ensure the rights and obligations of the people joining in traffic. Moreover, all solutions of traffic safety propaganda should be directed toward the beneficiaries with various creative forms, bringing the practical effectiveness to traffic safety propaganda. Most importantly, traffic safety propaganda in schools must be paid special attention, contributing to improving young generations’ awareness of traffic culture.

Dang Quang Khue from Army Corps No.4 emphasized the need to change the attitude and behavior of people joining in traffic apart from the need to get into the habit of obeying traffic laws such as providing timely assistance and rescue to the traffic accident victims, and assisting the old and children in crossing roads, etc.

Concluding the seminar, Deputy Secretary of Dong Nai HCM Communist Youth Union Le Thi Ngoc Loan emphasized the need to renovate and diversify forms and methods of traffic safety propaganda in order to effectively implement the campaign “The youth with traffic culture”. Young people always have to take the initiative in carrying out propaganda of traffic order and safety.
