Piglet Prices Surge Amid Short Supply

(News Portal – Dong Nai) - Recently, live pig prices have remained stable at a high level of 68,000-70,000 VND/kg, reaching a record high in many years. This surge in prices has consequently driven up the demand for piglets, particularly replacement gilts, in the market.

As a result, replacement gilts are currently being sold at over 10 million VND each, which is 2-3 million VND higher per pig compared to the previous low periods. The price of piglets has also risen sharply to 2-2.2 million VND each, nearly 1 million VND higher than before.

According to the Provincial Livestock Association, the increase in replacement gilt and piglet prices is primarily due to a rise in farmers' investment in restocking their herds. However, the main reason is the impact of diseases and market conditions. Since the end of 2023, farmers have reduced their herds, leading to a significant drop in the supply of piglets and replacement gilts. Additionally, major enterprises in the livestock industry are currently prioritizing supplying piglets to contract farms or their customers rather than selling them on the open market as before.
