Agricultural restructuring in new period

The Provincial People's Committee has just issued Decision No. 993/QD-UBND on the list of key provincial agricultural products in the period of 2020-2025. The list includes 24 major crops: annual crops, perennial industrial trees, fruit trees, medicinal plants, forestry trees and 5 livestock products.


 


In the new period, Dong Nai continues to focus on restructuring agriculture towards developing major groups of plants and animals with large and sustainable commodity scale, meeting well the domestic and export markets.

Strengths of industrial crops and fruit trees

The list of annual staple trees of Dong Nai includes items such as rice, corn, beans, cassava, sugarcane, vegetables of all kinds; Edible mushrooms, medicinal mushrooms. Perennial industrial crops include: rubber, pepper, coffee, cashew and cocoa. Perennial fruit trees include: durian, mango, rambutan, grapefruit, citrus, bananas, jackfruit, avocado, mangosteen, dragon fruit. And forest tree is hybrid acacia.

With rice, although the area has decreased over the years, Dong Nai still meets the requirements of national food security thanks to farmers investing in machinery, applying science and technology in production to increase productivity and output. Specifically, in 2019, the area of rice cultivated in the province reached nearly 59.8 thousand hectares, down nearly 12.7 thousand hectares, down 18% compared to 2009 but thanks to a 20% increase in rice productivity; rice output still reached nearly 325 thousand tons, not much change compared to 2009.

In the restructuring of agriculture, localities in the province have focused on developing the key groups of trees, which are perennial industries and fruit trees. As a result, up to now, the whole province has nearly 107 thousand hectares of perennial industrial trees such as cashew, coffee, pepper, rubber,...The area of fruit trees reached over 64 thousand hectares, an increase of over 11 thousand hectares, an increase of 32% compared to 2009. The whole province has established 25 key crop areas are perennial industrial crops and fruit trees. In particular, there are many famous specialty crops on the market such as: Pepper, mango, grapefruit, durian, rambutan, red dragon fruit, etc., which has many times more profit than before conversion. Currently, over 90% of all crops use new varieties.

Dong Nai's key livestock products in the new phase include terrestrial animals with pigs and chickens; Aquaculture products include white leg shrimp, giant freshwater shrimp and fish.


In 2019, the livestock industry was seriously affected by the African swine fever but so far, Dong Nai has been able to control this epidemic and is in the process of re-breeding and restoring production. Poultry production is currently plagued by the output affected by COVID-19. Along with efforts to overcome difficulties, the livestock industry continues to attract investment in the direction of professionalism, mainly in the form of well-invested industrial breeding with a major force of enterprises and large corporations. Whereby, the province's total pig herd is gradually recovering with a total of over 1.8 million heads; The total poultry flock of 23.6 million is still ranked among the top in the country in terms of total flock and production. In addition, the aquaculture industry is also a strength, contributing to the overall growth of the livestock industry in the province. According to data from Dong Nai Statistical Department, the total aquaculture and exploited aquatic production in 2019 reached over 64 thousand tons, an increase of more than 2 thousand tons over the same period last year. In addition, farmers proactively apply science - technology from breeding to breeding, limiting disease outbreaks, contributing to increasing farming output on the same area. In particular, the area of aquaculture ponds and lakes reached nearly 8.8 thousand hectares, an increase of more than 86 hectares over the same period last year. In which the area of raising fish is over 6.7 thousand hectares; 2 thousand hectares of shrimp farming area.


Currently, many localities set the goal of developing high-tech aquaculture models suitable for the new situation and increasing farmers' income. According to Vice Chairman of Nhon Trach District People's Committee Nguyen Thi Giang Huong, the locality is encouraging the replication of high-tech shrimp farming model. The district has over 1.9 thousand hectares of water surface for aquaculture. In particular, more than 1.5 thousand hectares of brackish water aquaculture. The model for high income with large area is high-tech brackish shrimp farming, mainly concentrated in Phuoc An, Phu Huu, Vinh Thanh communes,...
