Rice production in Dong Nai Province meets the supply plan

Monday - 01/11/2021 14:10

Although Dong Nai Province is not a locality with strengths in rice production and rice is not the main plant of the province, with the current cultivated area, the rice production has ensured the supply for the people in the province.

Currently, the localities in the province have been simultaneously deploying seeding for the winter-spring crop in 2021 - 2022. In this production season, the farmers have applied many good models such as growing rice in combination with fish farming or converting some rice areas to growing corn and crops in order to limit weather risks and earn better profits.

Good preparation for farming production

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development,  total area planted with annual crops of the Winter-Spring crop in 2021 - 2022 has reached over 39.5 thousand hectares. In which, the total cultivated area for rice is about 20.3 thousand hectares, the rest is corn, cassava and vegetables of all kinds.

It is estimated that the total area of rice cultivated for the whole year in the province has reached nearly 54.7 thousand hectares with the total rice output of the whole year reaching nearly 319 thousand tons per year, equivalent to supplying nearly 26.6 thousand tons per month. Meanwhile, the average consumption of rice in the province is about 19.5 thousand tons per month. Therefore, Dong Nai Province's rice production has completely met the consumption needs of people in the province.

According to the farmers in the province, from the beginning of the year until now, the weather has been quite favorable for the production. Accordingly, in the Summer-Autumn crop, the farmers won the rice season, and many other annual crops also achieved the good productivity. However, in the production of the winter-spring crop, the farmers have still faced many difficulties such as the increased input prices, unstable output due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, disadvantaged weather conditions, high risks of epidemics, etc.

In particular, in order to be proactive about the crop and limit the weather risks, especially drought and salinity at the end of the crop, the farmers have proactively sowed the seeds early, adjusted their production, and actively prevented diseases in the field for a successful crop. Securing the water sources for irrigation for the Winter-Spring crop is always a matter of concern to the farmers. Talking about this issue, the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Dinh Minh said that the irrigation work always ensures the production and daily life as planned. There is no shortage of the water sources for the irrigation and saltwater intrusion, affecting the agricultural production.

Many creative models have been followed

In producing the Winter-Spring crop, the farmers have faced many difficulties, in which the high price of input materials is a key difficulty for the farmers. Meanwhile, because  the annual productivity of rice and crops have already reached the high levels, the added productivity is not significant. Accordingly, the farmers are interested in implementing the solutions of applying the high technology to reduce the production costs, cultivating the rice in combination with fish farming, etc. in order to increase the profits in production.

Talking about the efforts to develop the agricultural production in difficult, Mr. Tran Quang Tu, Chairman of the Dinh Quan District People's Committee, said that the district has cooperated with the businesses to implement a model of applying the high technology to the organic rice production that helps increase the income for the local rice farmers. For the model of converting some areas from two rice crops to two corn crops with the participation of enterprises, the farmers are supported with seeds and pesticides, so their income is quite stable.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khai, a farmer in Phu Dien Commune (Tan Phu District) shared, this had been a low-lying land, so at the peak of the rainy season, the rice fields had been often flooded. Accordingly, for many years now, his family has implemented the model of intercropping rice cultivation and field fish farming without focusing only on rice cultivation as before. Accordingly, Mr. Khai has built the edge of the field higher and raise  fish in the rice field in the last months of the year. “The fish farming helps the land to become more fertile, so the rice has a high productivity. The field fish are raised as in the wild, taking advantage of the available food sources in the field such as stubble germinated with straw and weeds, etc., so the food costs are reduced"- Mr. Khai said.

Recently, many localities in the province have encouraged the farmers to switch to organic cultivation of rice, vegetables and fruit trees with many solutions in order to reduce the input costs in the production. Specifically, the farmers have taken the advantage of waste products in the agricultural production such as straw, corn stalks, organic waste combined with manure in livestock in order to make their own fertilizers, make microbial drugs in pest control, etc. The products have been made with safe quality, not only meeting the domestic market but also meeting the export standards in the fastidious markets.
