Environmental protection in inland waterway operations

The Government has just issued Decree No. 08/2021/ND-CP regulating the management of inland waterways, including the regulations on environmental protection in inland waterway operations.

The Decree requires project owners of constructions, maintenance, renovation and upgrading of inland waterways infrastructure to be responsible for preparing an environmental impact assessment report or environmental protection plan for submission. Approved authority. Allocate funding for environmental protection and include waste treatment measures, minimizing negative impacts on the environment in the design file. Organize the management, supervision and report to competent state agencies on environmental protection during the construction process.

The Decree also specifies environmental protection in the operation of inland ports and ports. Accordingly, the port and inland waterway terminal operator is responsible for developing and implementing the oil spill response plan in accordance with the regulations for inland water ports and inland water terminals for petroleum business. In addition, to collect and treat wastewater generated during the operation of ports and terminals in accordance with environmental technical regulations; perform periodic monitoring of wastewater.
