With more than 2,000 hectares of water surface area for aquaculture, Nhon Trach District is the largest brackish water aquaculture area in the province. This locality has also formed specialized farming areas for specialties such as white-leg shrimp, black tiger shrimp, crabs, scallops, oysters, etc. In which, the high-tech application model of white-leg shrimp and black tiger shrimp farming is being used by people due to the high economic efficiency.
This is also the development orientation of the province in the coming period in the direction of shifting from traditional intensive farming to mechanization and gradually shifting to automation, forming high-tech farming areas. The most prominent is the brackish water shrimp farming model in Nhon Trach District, which is changing strongly from extensive farming, improved extensive farming to semi-intensive and intensive farming. Shrimp farming households are increasingly boldly investing capital and applying new technologies in production to reduce disease risks and increase productivity and quality of farmed shrimp.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Dai, owner of a shrimp farm in Vinh Thanh Commune, Nhon Trach District, is a pioneer local farmer in converting from traditional shrimp farming to high-tech application. He invested in nylon tarpaulin at the bottom of the pond and made a net to cover the space above the pond, with a pond water treatment system, automatic shrimp feeding machine, etc. “With this transformation, shrimp productivity per crop will increase. The yield is 3-4 times higher than that of earthen pond culture. Every year, I can raise 4-5 crops, not just 2 crops like the traditional farming method. Disease risks are also better controlled.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan, Head of Economic Department of Nhon Trach District, the locality is actively supporting farmers to switch to a model of high-tech application in shrimp farming. Because of high-tech shrimp farming, farmers have good control over the variety, variety loss rate, disease safety, just enough food according to shrimp's needs and especially good handling of shrimp manure at the bottom of the pond, and ensure the environmental protection in aquaculture. In particular, the average yield is 15 tons per ha per crop. Farmers earn about VND1.1 billion per hectare per crop with submerged ponds and VND1.5 billion per hectare per crop with floating round tanks; much higher profit than the traditional shrimp farming model.
Mr. Le Tran Ba Thong, Deputy General Director of GROWMAX Aquafeed Company Limited, Loc An Industrial Zone, Long Thanh District assessed that Dong Nai authority is very interested in developing the aquaculture industry with many favorable support policies for investors. The seafood sector is one of Vietnam's strong export industries, one of the top in the world. The export potential of Vietnamese shrimp is still very high. Dong Nai has the advantage of developing aquaculture, especially shrimp, in which, Nhon Trach and Long Thanh Districts are very excellent farming areas. This is the reason for enterprises to decide to invest in a large-scale local aqua feed processing factory. In addition, the enterprise will invest in demonstration shrimp farms as a typical model in a closed chain from variety production, feed, to technical support for shrimp farmers.
