Circular economy increases competitive advantage for livestock industry

​On March 21, the Department of Livestock, the Executive Team of the Connecting Forum 970 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) coordinated with relevant units to organize an online forum "Circular economy in the livestock industry: Opportunities and challenges". Attending the forum were representatives of units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; leaders of Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development of provinces and cities in the country, experts, scientists, representatives of industry associations, businesses, cooperatives...

At the forum, many comments presented by scientists, experts and businesses in the field of agriculture on solutions to promote the circular economy in livestock industry; connecting circular economic models in agricultural value chains. In which, in order to develop a circular economy, it is necessary to improve mechanisms and policies; perfect the legal system on recycling and reuse of livestock waste and agricultural by-products in the direction of a circular economy... to encourage and attract investment.

Over the years, the livestock industry has continuously developed the total herd size, creating great economic values. According to a report by the Department of Livestock, the number of pig herds nationwide has reached more than 28.8 million heads, buffalo and cow herds have reached more than 8.9 million heads, and poultry herds have reached 533 million heads. However, the livestock industry also brings with it the consequences of environmental pollution; greenhouse gas emissions; livestock by-products have not been reproduced in other fields... In that context, chain production to integrate multi-values according to the circular economy model is a sustainable direction to contribute to recycling structure of the livestock industry.

Dong Nai in particular with its position as the livestock capital of the country with large herds of pigs and chickens, the province is applying agricultural circular models, using high technology, applying the most advanced technology to reuse of by-products in livestock industry and farming.

Director of the Department of Livestock Duong Tat Thang acknowledged the contributions at the forum and pledged that the Department of Livestock would coordinate with units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop appropriate policies for livestock in the coming period. Circular economy is an inevitable trend that has been applied by many countries around the world. This model brings practical benefits such as adding value, increasing agricultural and livestock products, and harmonizing long-term benefits between different industries. For the circular economy in the livestock industry, the protection and preservation of the environment is really essential. This is also said to be the root of green growth and sustainable development.
