Big C to Spend VND13 Billion on Energy Saving Project

In response to the PM’s call on energy saving and efficient use and the coming World Environment Day on June 5, 2010, on May 14, Big C supermarket system held a signing ceremony on energy saving contracts with Thang Long Light Service and Trading Joint Stock company and Schneider Electric Vietnam with total investment capital of up to VND13 billion.

    Accordingly, by late June, all Trade centers and Big C hypermarkets will be equipped with fluorescent lamp T5, with costs totaling up VND9 billion. The fluorescent lamp T5 has high luminosity coefficient and consumes less power. Using this lamp can save 30% energy but still ensure brightness meeting Vietnam standards.

    Energy monitoring and management system is worth VND3 billion supplied by Schneider Electric Vietnam, planning to be finished and put in use in early July. Energy saving solution to Big C supermarket, including weight and measurement tools, power quality monitoring devices, Powerlogic ION Enterprise software and repair and maintenance services within three years.

The energy saving projects are signed

    The system will help Big C to monitor and handle energy parameters in each shop and continuously and instantly send the information to headquarters. There manager compares and collates power-use efficiency and makes timely report on how efficient each shop is accurately, providing energy costs to each load in the supermarket via automatic report system. This helps Big C to manage energy economically in the whole system by improving awareness of users, operation engineers and all employees and better improve quality of electricity.

    In general, the energy monitoring and management system will help big C on average saves 5% of OPEX (operation expenditure) and CAPEX (capital expenditure) to each branch by managing energy consumption demand and optimize investment costs of energy saving projects in the near future.

    As a system of retailers, commercial centers and hypermarkets, shopping centers of Big C are visited by tens of thousands of customers every day, power consumption by Big C system represents great portion in external service costs paid by Big C (almost 30%). If successful, the project will help the supermarket cut down 40% of current costs.

    Energy saving allows Big C to come with two goals at same time: Saving costs and acting as impetus for the policy “Cheap price for All homes”, and in turn better keeping consumers’ purchase power as well as saving power, a limited resource of the country, partially contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development.

    In addition to the goal “Customers’ Satisfaction” with strong commitments on prices, Big C continually innovates and modernizes the purchase, human resource, information system,, infrastructure, highly social projects, in which environmental protection is top priority in Big C’s sustainable development strategy in Vietnam. These saving projects indicate its ceaseless efforts for a Green, Clean, Beautiful Environment.

    Besides the energy saving projects, there are certain environmental protection programs constantly conducted in Big C system, such as Lohas multiuse bags, used battery collection and so on.
