China: Former Vice Mayor of Chengdu city sentenced to 15 years in jail.

- According to Xinhua News Agency, on September 24th, Court of Chengdu city, Sichuan (China), sentenced former Mayor of Chongqing city Wang Lijun to15 years in jail for being guilty of bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking.



Wang Lijun was tried from September 17th for the above crimes.

According to the minute of the court issued by Xinhua Agency on September 19th, the most remarkable detail in this complicated case was that on January 28th when Wang Lijun was in charge of vice-Mayor and Director of Public Security of Chengdu city, he made a report to the leader of Party committee of Chengdu city that Mrs. Gu Kailai, wife of Secretary Party committee of Chengdu city Bo Xilai was involved in the murder of Neil Hey Wood in November 2011. On the next morning, Wang Lijun was “cruelly shouted and slapped into his face” in front of a witness. After that, Wang Lijun ordered his subordinate to conduct investigation and collect evidence indicating that Mrs. Gu Kailai was involved in the murder.

Wang entered the US Consulate General in Chengdu without permission at 2:31 p.m. on February 6 and asked the US side for political asylum.

In March, Executive Committee of China Communist Party made its decision on the termination of Wang’s post as Vice Mayor of Chengdu city.

Court of Hefei city, Anhui province sentenced Mrs. Gu Kailai to death for murder of the British businessman. However, the sentence was suspended for 2 years.

Chengdu is the most populated central city of China with 31.5 million citizens and 82,300 square km of area.
